Would you like to do some things differently in your life?
Hypnosis can help you change your behavior. It's not magic, but it can be a way
for you to cope more effectively at work and at home. Since there's a great deal
of misinforma tion about hypnosis, take a few minutes to read the following
questions.
WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?
Hypnosis merely means that your body is relaxed and your mind is focused. It is,
therefore, a mental state of heightened awareness you become receptive to
suggestions which can result in positive change.
IS THERE ANY DANGER IN BEING HYPNOTIZED?
There are no dangers involved. Hypnosis is not the trance-like state depicted on
television or in the movies. Reports of people being hypnotized for long periods of
time, or being forced to do things they wouldn't ordinarily do are totally untrue.
Hypnosis is not a magical or mystical state you are aware of your behavior
throughout, and you will not do anything you wouldn't do ordinarily.
WHO SHOULD PERFORM HYPNOSIS?
Hypnosis should be done only by properly trained professionals, namely mental
health professionals such as psychologists and psychiatrists, physicians and
dentists. Since there is no licensing to perform hypnosis in New York, you should
be sure to check qualifications and credentials before agreeing to hypnosis.
WHAT ARE THE USES OF HYPNOSIS?
It can be used for almost any desired behavioral change. People use it most commonly to help them lose weight, stop smoking, relax, control pain, alleviate sexual problems, overcome fears, control or eliminate habits, enhance sports or other competitive ability and to relieve or cope with many problems that are physical in nature. Hypnosis can be combined with psychotherapy to treat almost any problem.
DO THE EFFECTS OF HYPNOSIS LAST FOREVER?
No, the effects don't last forever; they must be reinforced. Initially the posthypnotic suggestions can be reinforced by playing an audio tape made during an actual hypnotic induction of the person. After the individual has been hypnotized several times, he or she can be taught a method of self-hypnosis. It is a quick, effective way to induce the hypnotic state and to reinforce the posthypnotic suggestions, without the use of the tape.
WHO CAN BE HYPNOTIZED?
Almost anyone. Some people are more responsive than others and therefore will achieve a deeper state of hypnosis. In general, however, the depth of the hypnotic state is not important; almost everyone is capable of achieving a state of hypnosis deep enough to bring about desired behavioral changes.
IS THERE ANY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GROUP AND INDIVIDUAL HYPNOSIS SESSIONS?
Individual sessions are far superior to group sessions because they are paced to meet individual needs, and the rate at which individuals respond to hypnosis. In individual sessions, the post- hypnotic suggestions are tailored to meet your specific needs.
IS HYPNOSIS GUARANTEED TO RESULT IN A BEHAVIORAL CHANGE?
No. There are many variables which influence, human behavior, and there is no treatment which, ethically, can be guaranteed effective.
